The most common beauty tips passed down through generations include never sleeping with makeup on, moisturising daily, and refraining from picking spots. A survey of 2,000 women revealed that 68% swear by advice given to them by older friends or relatives. The top 40 tips included the 'less is more' approach to makeup and drinking a glass of water each morning.

Some participants also recommended patting the face dry instead of rubbing it to avoid irritation and washing with cold water to 'close' pores. Currently, 51% of parents have shared some of the beauty wisdom they've inherited with their own children. The study was commissioned by Vitabiotics Perfectil.

A spokesperson for the company said: "Advice around staying hydrated, getting enough sleep and resisting the temptation to pick at blemishes is as true today as it ever was." "We believe that beauty starts from within. When grandmothers and mothers share beauty tips with their children, it's more than just passing on knowledge.

" "It can often bring back sweet memories of their own childhood and strengthens family bonds. These moments of guidance and care foster a sense of closeness and continuity." Interestingly, beauty advice is still largely spread through word-of-mouth, with 46% of women not relying on online sources for inspiration but instead turn to family and friends (22%), this is then followed by beauty professionals (21%).

Other nuggets of wisdom passed down include using cucumbers around the eyes to reduce puffiness, while 20% were told to be extra gentle when removing eye makeup. A total of 15% were advised to close their pores with a splash of cold water post-cleansing and just over one in ten (13%) also shared the valuable advice of testing new skincare products on a small patch of skin before applying them all over the face. The study, carried out by OnePoll, found that the majority of those surveyed (85%) believe beauty starts from within.

A spokesperson for Perfectil commented: "True beauty is more than skin deep and starts with looking after your health and wellbeing from the inside out." "Timeless beauty advice, classic brands and supplements are shared and passed down through generations, proving they stand the test of time.".
