T here was once a bride who wanted a really fantastic wedding cake. She wanted it to be so fantastic that she believed there was only one person for the job, celebrity pastry chef Sylvia Weinstock. The only hitch was, Weinstock’s bakery was in New York and the bride was getting married in Sardinia.

Enter the experts at Gander & White, the luxury logistics company that’s been delivering on requests like this for over 90 years. The company might be best known for transporting high-end art, but they know how to keep a delicate ganache from melting on a 4,000-mile journey. It’s a complicated business.



Gander & White got to work on the logistics of transporting the 5ft four-tier wedding cake along with its pastry chef chaperone. There was very little room for error on timing — the cake needed to be as fresh as possible and there was only one flight from JFK to Milan a day. This put even more pressure on successful interactions with the American and Italian border control teams involved, none of whom would be allowed to test the cake.

Oh, and the cake was made with a secret recipe. Since the ingredients had to be cleared for export by the US Department of Agriculture, Gander & White had to negotiate with Weinstock to share them with the authorities..
