Article content Spin Cycle Stage 2, The Next Act Backstage Theatre, 10330 84 Ave 2 stars out of 5 A paramedic, a chef and two teachers walk into a laundromat. Sounds like a joke, right? No. It’s the set-up for Spin Cycle, an hour-long exploration of values and priorities as debated by four folks who find themselves trapped in the laundry room of an apartment building.

Leanne and Emmitt are teachers who spend each Sunday separating their whites from their darks while marking papers and loudly debating the merits of capitalism. Bishop, a paramedic, is sleeping it off behind a dryer after a bender the night before when he awakens to the shouting. Meghan, a high school drop-out who is seven months pregnant, is a chef who is going to be late for work unless she can get her uniform clean pronto.

Stories about folks thrust together in elevators, or engine rooms in boats about to sink, are a staple of storytelling. It works when the characters have something to say, or can tell a good joke, or die in a tragic and tear-jerking fashion. Unfortunately, Spin Cycle lacks those elements.

Still, it appeared to be very nearly sold out. Am I missing something? Find your Fringe! You can read all of our reviews here. Have you been Finding your Fringe? What shows have you seen? Do you have any favourites? Let us know! We’d love to include your comments online.
