Article content Mass Debating Stage 11, Varscona Theatre, 10329 83 Ave 5 stars out of 5 Three boys and three girls square off at the 1973 Catholic Mass Debating Championship Finals. They’re all from junior high schools that insist on uniforms meant to level the playing field, but one of the teams has a sizable advantage over the other. (Hint: it’s the team from St.

Sebastian’s Parochial School for Entitled Boys.) In this hour-long giggle (written and directed by Trevor Schmidt), the two squads must debate Pope-sanctioned proposals such as Women are Unsuitable for the Workplace and Birth Control Legislation Will Be the Destruction of the Church. The all-star nerds on the squeaky-voiced boys squad are expertly played by Kristin Johnston, Michelle Todd and Cheryl Jameson, while Schmidt, Jake Tkaczyk and Jason Hardwick are ridiculously pretty in plaid.

Both sides employ classic debating techniques (obfuscation, word salad, tap dancing) while trying to hide their secret longing for something more. Once again, Schmidt is at the helm of hilarity in this Fringe highlight. Be it resolved that you attend.
