Article content Emo Majok: African Aussie Stage 5, Acacia Hall, 10433 83 Ave. 4 Stars out of 5 Standup is a natural fit for the Edmonton Fringe, a close relative to one-act theatre in the performance family. Emo Majok brings his unique talent to this year’s festival with African Aussie, a celebrated comedian making his way from the southern hemisphere for Fringe.

He was the winner of the Raw Comedy in Western Australia and a finalist for Australia’s Got Talent. That pedigree shines through in his hour-long set. He has a natural calm with the audience, chatting casually with members of the sold-out crowd and mixing in stories and jokes from his past.

It’s a funny evening from a celebrated comedian. Majok uses everything from his personal life and his past as material for his show. He talks about fleeing Sudan with his family, able to spin a human tragedy into material for his show.

It’s probably a natural reaction for someone who makes a living in standup, but still an admirable and impressive ability. His form of comedy is inclusive and cute, a family man who can poke fun at his home and himself, not one to punch down. That’s not to say that Majok’s show is family-friendly and you should bring your kids; there are a few jokes about his romantic excursions, but the punchline is cute more than it is vulgar.
