The patient's journey has been incredibly difficult. She had been struggling with her weight, breathing difficulties, high blood pressure, and severe hip and leg pain. It had been a tough life for a 28-year-old patient who, because of her weight, had struggled with many health issues such as high blood pressure, infertility, Covid-19, and avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip that even necessitated a hip replacement surgery.

Weighing 122 kg, the woman from Mumbai recently underwent a successful and transformative Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, following which she managed to lose 21 kg in just five months. It marked a significant milestone in her journey towards improved health and well-being. Read on to find out more about her case.

The case was handled by Dr Aparna Govil Bhasker, a consultant bariatric and laparoscopic surgeon at MetaHeal - Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery Center and Saifee Hospital in Mumbai. Pregnancy Loss, Depression, Weight Gain A statement by the hospital read that the patient and her husband had been married for over five years, and had been through multiple IVF cycles. They conceived twins, but tragically lost one of them in the first month of pregnancy, and the second one just days before the delivery.

During this trying period, the patient's health deteriorated significantly and she gained a lot of weight that aggravated her existing health issues. Obesity was compounded by mental health issues like depression, which weighed on her along with societal judgment and stigma. The woman also ended up contracting Covid infection that required hospitalisation and prolonged treatment using steroids.

The pandemic isolated her and she could not engage in any kind of physical activity, leading to more weight gain. The use of steroid for her Covid-19 treatment ultimately led to the diagnosis of avascular necrosis of the hip . At a young age, she underwent hip replacement surgery.

Conditions like PCOD and reproductive milestones such as pregnancies and menopause often contribute to weight gain.

Women tend to prioritise others, leaving little time for self-care and exercise," Dr Aparna said in a statement. She added that this patient's journey has been 'incredibly difficult'. "When she came to us, she was struggling with excess weight, which led to breathing difficulties, high blood pressure, and severe hip and leg pain.

Her mobility and daily activities were severely restricted, and her weight was affecting her other hip as well." Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) The doctor explained that this surgery involves reducing the stomach size and rerouting the small intestines to a stomach pouch. It can change the 'hormonal milieu' of the body to decrease appetite and improve weight and blood glucose control.

It was a two-hour surgery that was done through keyhole incisions. The patient was able to consume liquids orally within 24 hours of the surgery. She was discharged shortly after.
