Gloucester City moved up to second, behind Merthyr Town, in the Southern League Premier Division South with a 1-0 win at Tiverton Town. Joe Hanks converted a 64th-minute penalty at Ladysmead, meaning they trail the Welsh side by two points with a game in hand. “We have got to come to places like this and get three points,” manager Mike Cook told the club's YouTube channel.
“Last week at Hanwell we played really well, created lots of chances and got a draw. “Maybe this week we haven’t played as well with the ball, haven’t created as many chances, but we have got the points so that’s good. “It’s going to be up and down all season, but we’ve had one loss and we want to keep that going as long as possible.
“It’s lovely for the fans who have travelled a long way to go home happy and that means a lot to me.” Both teams started with purpose and a very competitive opening saw a few chances come the way of each side. Tiverton had the first opportunity as a ball over the top that found Joe Parker running in on goal was neatly taken by the former Gloucester man into his stride.
But with Ben Richards-Everton to contend with, the striker could not get the contact needed to beat goalkeeper Nathan Harvey. Tiverton keeper Zak Baker made a save in his six-yard box before Asa Hall went close after Baker’s kick was laid off by Parker with Hall’s curler marginally off target. After a goalless first half, Hanks saw a 57th-minute effort trickle wide, with Baker beaten.
