Extreme heat forecasted to blanket the region and a mechanical issue forced Utica Community Schools educators to call off the first day of school at one local building. The district announced class at Stevenson High School, located on Dodge Park Road just north of Metropolitan Parkway (16 Mile Road) was cancelled due to the building’s HVAC system breaking down. “Stevenson High School will need to be closed Tuesday, August 27.

Earlier today, the HVAC system went down and – given the need to secure the parts necessary for repairs – will not be operational for the first day of school. Given the extreme temperatures, we will need to cancel school on Tuesday, August 27,” a note on the district website states. “We are disappointed as it is the first day, but our maintenance teams are working to secure the proper parts needed to repair the system.

We will keep you updated as soon as we are aware on the status of the remaining part of the week. “Stevenson students who attend courses at the Instructional Resource will have an excused absence. If families are able to provide transportation to the IRC, students are welcome to attend.

Coaches will contact their teams to make them aware of the status of athletic competitions.” The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the Metro Detroit area that runs from 10 a.m.

to 10 p.m. as meteorologists expect heat indices will reach the high 90s on Tuesday.
