Pune: The fire brigade on Friday rescued two citizens — a 45-year-old man and an elderly — from the Mutha river in separate incidents from Siddheshwar ghat and Karvenagar, respectively. Fire officer Kamlesh Chaudhary from Kasba fire brigade station said the central fire brigade control room received calls from the public that a drunken 45-year-old man, who was standing at one of the banks of the Mutha River, was swept away after water level under the Baba Bhide bridge in Deccan Gymkhana increased around 1.30am.

Chaudhary said a fire tender was deployed and firemen started rescue operation in the river. The team traced the man near Siddheshwar ghat where he was screaming for help. He did not suffer any injury in the incident, he said.

Fire officer Prabhakar Umratkar, while commenting on the second incident, said an elderly man suffering from a mental illness swept away while he was collecting liquor bottles from the river bank. He said as per the information given by the local residents, the victim is a beggar involved in collecting waste and liquor bottles thrown out at the river bank on a regular basis. After being swept away in the river, the victim caught hold of a tree.

Two firemen entered the river and used a ring and a rope to pull him out of the water. The man was terrified about the whole incident and was later handed over to the Kothrud police.
