Fire crews tackled a flat blaze into the early hours of the morning after smoke was reported coming from the building. Residents in Cornwallis Gardens in Hastings were evacuated from their homes as six fire engines were called to tackle a blaze in flats on the road shortly before 11.30pm on Thursday evening.
Sussex Police and ambulance crews were also sent to the scene as gas and water supplies were cut to the building in a bid to make the area. The fire was extinguished shortly after midnight and all residents have been accounted for. 24pm after reports of smoke coming from the building. Hastings residents were warned to avoid the area as four fire engines were initially sent to the scene. The incident was escalated shortly after midnight as more firefighters were sent to the scene with breathing apparatus.
The fire was extinguished at around 12.30am this morning. The fire service added: "The cause of the fire will be investigated.
"Everyone from the property has now been accounted for. "Crews are damping down and turning debris over to ensure any remaining hot spots are dealt with.".
