Group secretary Stephanie Wood said for two decades the fellowship has been a sanctuary of care and support for those whose lives have been affected by mental illness. One of the regular members, David, said he felt accepted in the group and had learned much about dealing with his illness. “The monthly get togethers have been wonderful for me so I don’t feel alone,” he said.
“I really like catching up with everyone and having a laugh.” Keith, one of the group hosts, has been with the group since its creation in 2004 and said that often it was tricky to know where to go and what to do. “We offer a sympathetic ear and safe space to open up,” he said.
“Over the years we’ve seen hundreds of people and their families feel a sense of relief and find ways to access information as well as a shared community.” Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month. During warmer months – February, March, April, September, October and November – gatherings are held from 11.
