FARGO — A new FDA approved drug, to help people with schizophrenia, will soon be accessible for medical officials to prescribe. It's called Cobenfy; a pill that will need to be taken twice a day. After a five-week clinical trial, it became the first new pill in more than 30 years to treat adults with schizophrenia.

Mercedez Marvig, a nurse practitioner with Essentia Health, said the new drug will bypass the unmanageable side effects caused by other medications. The only side effects you could experience are nausea, constipation or an upset stomach, Marvig said. Within the first month of taking the medication Marvig said people should see results.

"It had really good results, only 5% of patients who were given Cobenfy stopped taking the medication, which is a fraction of what the other anecdotes medication have, which is about 30%," Marvig said. Cobenfy will be available for nurses to prescribe on Oct. 25.

Marvig says people who have a hard time emptying their bladder or severe liver issues should not use the new drug..
