In John Lewis I counted three, not including the single-breasted style, and my local Marks & Spencer had a trench in its window. Of all the clothes that feature regularly on the style chart, the trench coat is the one that holds its position year after year.
But this feels very different. Last week every fourth female on the street in London was wearing one. There’s an explosion of them: young women wearing them tied back over jeans and a vest; mums wearing them open, over end-of-summer midi-dresses; trenches belted over trousers and skirts with loafers or pumps; on women heading to and from the office.
I’m racking my brain for a time when any one coat has had such a huge uptake, but this feels genuinely unprecedented. And it’s not even spring, when a shower-proof trench over a navy top and white jeans (very Jackie O) makes sense. Burberry: Rosie Hun.
