Pune: A 23-year-old farmer was arrested on Thursday on the charge of dragging a havaldar from the Loni Kalbhor traffic police for about 100 feet, along with his bike, after he was caught riding a motorcycle without a number plate on the Hadapsar industrial road around 6.30 pm on Wednesday. The policeman suffered an injury on his right knee.
He was discharged from the Sassoon General Hospital after treatment. The Hadapsar police produced the arrested farmer, Rutik Hinge from Hingnemala in Hadapsar, before a local court in Wanowrie. The court remanded him in magisterial custody for 14 days.
He was later sent to the Yerawada central jail. Assistant inspector Vilas Sutar of the Hadapsar police on Friday said havaldar Chetan Sulakhe (42) had signalled Hinge to stop while managing traffic because he was riding a bike without a number plate. Hinge did not renew the bike’s insurance policy either.
Sutar said the policeman told Hinge to show his driving licence and instructed him to take the bike to the roadside. The havaldar caught hold of Hinge’s shoulder when he tried to flee. The police officer said Hinge dragged Sulakhe up to a distance of about 100ft, along with the bike, but he did not leave him.
Later, the traffic policemen nabbed the biker and handed him over to the Hadapsar police for taking action. The farmer told the police that he had given the number plate for painting and was riding the bike without a registration number for three days. Sutar said the traffic police had challaned the biker.
