Meryl, 75, hit the red carpet in Los Angeles alongside co-stars Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and, of course, Martin, 74, as Hulu gets set to air the latest episodes of the hit comedy-murder mystery series. The Hollywood star was a recurring character Loretta Durkin in season three of the show and notably played Martin Short’s character, Oliver Putnam’s, love interest.
Loretta will make a return in the new season. Last year, fans noticed they were also pretty familiar offscreen after they seemed particularly cosy at the Golden Globes . This happened a few months after Meryl’s representatives confirmed the Mamma Mia star was separated from her husband of 45 years Don Gummer (and had been for six years), further fuelling speculation.
At the time the pair were quick to shut it down. Shortly after the event, Martin said they were ‘just very close friends’ in an episode of the Club Random with Bill Maher podcast while representatives for the actor confirmed to People that they were ‘just very good friends, nothing more.’ But fans remain hopeful after the latest developments.
In one video captured by US publication Deadline, the duo were spotted strolling with their hands held and co-star Steve trailing behind them as they attended the after-party for the premiere. This came after red carpet photos from earlier that evening of the two sweetly capturing each other’s hands as they posed together. ‘I simply love living in a world where 75 year old Meryl Streep is having a soft relationship launch with her 74 year old boyfriend, Martin Short,’ @hollylottie 88 wrote on X.
‘How many times have you watched this video of Meryl Streep and martin short holding hands? yes,’ @andwmtays added. ‘If Martin Short and Meryl Streep are dating, it’s the greatest couple of all time and nothing else comes close,’ @LiamB3_ echoed. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week Martin confirmed they remain ‘friends’. Meanwhile, Meryl’s representatives told Page Six that they ‘are just friends and not dating’. The pair have been friends for quite a few years, with photos of the two attending Broadway shows dating back to 2015.
Most recently they attended Merrily We Roll Along together. And their onscreen chemistry is undeniable. Only Murder in the Building creator John Hoffman reflected on the pairing in an interview with TheWrap .
‘It’s pretty unexpected to imagine a pairing of Meryl Streep with Martin Short and watch them find this incredible connection together and, as Meryl said, to not have it be twee or about the age or about any of that. ‘It’s just a beautiful romance that you buy, I think because of who these two characters are.’ He then praised Martin, saying he was ‘incredibly and nobody works harder at it’.
