Saturday, August 24, 2024 Sky Lagoon, Iceland’s breathtaking oceanfront geothermal lagoon, has unveiled Skjól, a major expansion of its Turf House and a reimagined ritual that embraces the core of Icelandic bathing culture. Officially open to both Icelanders and tourists as of August 22, 2024, this enhanced experience guides guests on a wellness journey deeply rooted in Icelandic traditions, paying tribute to time-honored rituals. “Skjól represents an invitation to engage in a ritual that is as old as Iceland itself,” says Helga Albertsdottir, Managing Director of Sky Lagoon.

“Providing an inclusive experience that is both distinctly Icelandic and universally appealing, Sky Lagoon honors the past while offering a refuge in the present.” Guests are taken on a transformative journey where every element of design and architecture is meticulously inspired by Iceland’s natural landscapes. Skjól, now an integral part of the guest experience, encourages visitors to connect deeply with the raw elements of Iceland.

This expanded offering includes Ylur, a second sauna featuring Iceland’s largest single-pane glass window, showcasing a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, a new ritual element called Saft introduces a traditional elixir infused with krækiber (crowberries), native to Iceland’s lava fields. “For Icelanders, Skjól is more than just a word; it’s a shelter from the storm and a moment of peace amidst life’s hectic pace,” Albertsdottir adds.

“It offers all guests a sanctuary as they embark on their Sky Lagoon journey.” Sky Lagoon, managed by Pursuit, is located in Kársnes Harbour, Kópavogur, just minutes from Reykjavik. It features a 70-meter (230 ft) infinity-edge lagoon, highlighted by awe-inspiring sunsets, Northern Lights, and dark sky views.

The new Skjól Ritual and expanded Turf House officially opened on August 22, 2024.
