Edited excerpts from the interview with Trystan Gravelle i n Singapore: Tristan, you play a politician in LOTR .

How much do you relate to today’s politics in real life politics and your role that you play? There’s always parallels to draw. You could be at any time, you know, there’d be parallels I found fascinating. One about Pharazon, he’s a politician, but he’s also a philosopher, a sea captain.



He’s a man of the people. There’s many things, you know, many sides and layers to his character. What was your source of inspiration when you were preparing for this character? Reading about classical leaders back in, you know, antiquity as well, something that really struck me.

I read a book by Henry Kissinger and his experiences of dealing with the likes of Charles de Gaulle and Conrad Adenauer, Richard Nixon, Margaret Thatcher, and the impact that these very strong characters, very strong leaders, the first two in the aftermath of a large war in rebuilding their countries and the impact that they had on him because he was a strong character himself, you know, Henry Kissinger and Conrad Ad.
