George Summerlin Reef , Atlantic Beach Reef and Howard Chapin Reef are just a few of the aquatic creations developed as part of North Carolina’s artificial reef program, creating a top scuba diving destination.

Near Cape Hatteras, the icy Labrador Current surges down from the north, and the balmy Gulf Stream flows up from the tropical south. Where these two currents collide, huge waves arise, especially during storms. The Atlantic Ocean off the shore of the Crystal Coast is known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” home to over 2,000 shipwrecks scattered across the coastline.

Divers can explore these naturalized, underwater works of art, including The USS Schurz, a German army boat that was attacked and sank in 1918; The Amagansett, a 1954 fishing boat that sank after a storm; and The Liberty Ship, a 1941 vessel that was sunk as part of the artificial reef program. You can swim along with jellyfish, Loggerhead turtles, octopuses, dolphins, whales, Sand Tiger Sharks, eels, catfish, Seaweed Blennies and Sea Spiders. Discovery Diving Company, Inc.

, Encounter SCUBA and Olympus Dive Center are just a two of the Crystal Coast diving partners. These companies will guide divers of all skill levels on reef and wreck tours.
