As a US legacy carrier, there is no question that American Airlines has a strong presence in the New York metropolitan area. The Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier is one of a few airlines that serve all three of the area’s airports – specifically referring to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) as hubs.

The airline has the largest network from the former, but still serves a plethora of routes from the latter. Additionally, American has a robust regional network from LGA. While the airline has hundreds of daily flights from the two airports, it still has a mighty operation from nearby Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).



The airport is undoubtedly dominated by its competitor, United Airlines, but demand has grown for American over the years. Its network grew even more when it combined operations with US Airways in 2015. One of the perks of flying on American to EWR is that the carrier operates out of the airport’s new and state-of-the-art Terminal A, which opened last year.

More than 1,200 flights, serving five destinations The one world Alliance airline’s market share may not take much of a bite out of United’s at EWR, but it still serves more destinations than the third legacy carrier, Delta Air Lines. American serves five destinations from EWR, which are all hubs for the airline: Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) Miami International Airport (MIA) Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) In September, American has over 1,200 flights scheduled at EWR, according to aviation data and analytics provider Cirium . Its operation offers more than 211,000 seats and over 224 million available seat miles (ASMs).

Charlotte, Chicago, & Dallas/Fort Worth The most frequencies are to and from CLT. The route, which covers 528 miles in each direction, will have a total of 304 flights – 152 each way. The Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 are typically deployed on this route, although American has used its Airbus narrowbodies between the two cities in the past.

Next month, the A320 will operate only one flight in each direction, while the A321 is scheduled on 125 frequencies – 62 northbound and 63 southbound. The remainder of the flights will handled by 737-800 and MAX 8. Both aircraft accommodate 172 seats in a two-class layout.

First class has 16 seats, while the main cabin has 156 seats – 24 of which are designated as Main Cabin Extra seats with increased legroom. American will offer a total of 54,476 seats between CLT and EWR – 27,238 each way. The airline also competes with United Airlines, United Express, and Spirit Airlines on the route.

The second most popular route American operates from EWR is ORD. It covers 719 miles in each direction and has a total of 296 frequencies scheduled next month. The airline will deploy three mainline aircraft types on the route – A319, 737-800, and MAX 8 – while its wholly-owned regional airline, Envoy Air, will operate the Embraer E170 and E175 under the American Eagle brand.

The 737-800 will understandably handle the most amount of flights, handling 92 in each direction, which totals to 184. The A319 and MAX 8 both have a total of 54 scheduled flights, or 27 each way. Envoy will operate only four flights – two each on the E170 and E175.

American Airlines' on-and-off relationship with the Airbus A350 reflects its evolving strategy to balance innovation, cost, and fleet efficiency. American’s A319s accommodate 128 passengers in a two-class configuration. First class has eight seats while the main cabin has the remaining 120.

There are 24 Main Cabin Extra seats. The E170 has a total of 65 seats. First class comprises 12 seats, Main Cabin Extra has 20 seats, and there are 33 standard main cabin seats.

The E175 is slightly larger, but has the same amount of first class and Main Cabin Extra seats. It has 44 standard seats in the main cabin. In total, American will offer 48,130 seats on the route.

United also flies between EWR and ORD, as well as Spirit. Between EWR and DFW, American has 236 flights scheduled in September. The route covers 1,372 miles and has multiple daily frequencies.

The airline only uses two aircraft types on the route – the 737-800 and the A321 – but again, the 737-800 will handle the most frequencies. The aircraft will operate 79 eastbound and 78 westbound flights, totaling 157. The A321, which has 190 seats onboard, will be deployed on 39 flights to EWR and 40 to DFW.

In September, American will offer a total of 42,014 seats on the route – 20,998 eastbound and 21,016 westbound. Similarly, United and Spirit are competitors. Miami & Phoenix The journey between EWR and MIA is 1,086 miles, and American will operate 224 flights on the route next month.

The A319, 737-800, and MAX 8 will also handle the frequencies, albeit the A319 will only handle six flights. The 737-800 is scheduled on 126 flights, and the MAX 8 will perform 92 flights. In total, American will offer 38,264 seats on the route, competing with again, United and Spirit.

The carrier’s nonstop service between EWR and PHX is its longest route from the New York Area airport, covering 2,133 miles. However, it has the least amount of frequencies compared to the aforementioned routes. Next month, American will operate a total of 79 flights to EWR and 78 flights to PHX, totaling 157 flights.

The airline will use the 737 MAX 8, A321, and A321neo on the route, offering a total of 28,972 seats. The A321neo has a slightly larger capacity than the A321 at 196 seats. First class has two seats while the main cabin has the remaining 176 seats.
