Guwahati: Amid the ongoing celebration of the classical language status of Assamese, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasised that every community in the state should strive to preserve its language and culture, as each language embodies a rich heritage. The weeklong celebration, titled “Bhasha Gourab Saptah”, commenced on Sunday and will conclude on Saturday. Throughout the week, the celebration featured cultural processions, discussions, symposiums, and various events related to literature and language across the state.
In a video message posted on his social media handle, the CM said, “A language represents a colourful history of a civilisation. When we speak in our mother tongue, we feel that our parents as well as forefathers also communicated in the same language.” He further said a language represents the tradition of a particular community or civilisation, its continuity, social life, and heritage.
“Therefore, instead of celebrating the Bhasha Gourab Saptah solely for the Assamese language , we have emphasised the celebration of the language of each community in the state by focusing on its evolution, beauty, diversity, vocabulary, grammar, script, among others,” he added. The Union cabinet on Oct 3 sanctioned conferring classical language status to Assamese, Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Bengali languages. The state cabinet on Oct 8 endorsed a resolution to celebrate the status granted to the language and express gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Mo.
