and Meghan Markle may have been making a concerted effort over the past few months to refresh their image as a couple, but there's one person who's not impressed with their rebrand. Eric Trump, son of Donald, recently shared his candid thoughts on the Duke and Duchess of – and it's safe to say it's likely he won't be gifted a jar of American Riviera Orchard strawberry jam any time soon. ‘You can happily have those two back,’ he said in an interview with GB .

‘We’ll happily send them back from America. You can have them back over here, but I’m not sure if you want them anymore,’ he added. ‘We might not want them anymore, it feels like they’re on an island of their own.

.. You can have spoiled apples in every orchard.

’ As the old adage goes: like father, like son. In a , Donald Trump described Price Harry as having been ‘so disrespectful to the country..

. I think he's an embarrassment'. at the Conservative Political Action Conference earlier this year, he said: 'I wouldn’t protect him.

He betrayed . That’s unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me.

’ It's a view that Eric certainly seems to share – although when asked whether his father would be in favour of making Harry's controversial visa documentation if he were president, he refused to be drawn on the matter. Before giving his damning assessment of the couple, Eric noted that he and his father ‘had so much respect’ for the late Queen Elizabeth, and name-checked several other with which the family are allegedly friendly. ‘My mum [the late Ivana Trump] knew so many of them for years.

.. [she also] had a great relationship with Diana and everyone else,’ he said, describing the British monarchy as a ‘sacred institution.

.. it's beautiful and it's something that is actually admired by a lot of Americans.

’ Indeed, the Trumps have always had a good relationship with most of the royal family. Donald Trump could hardly have been more effusive about his meeting with Queen Elizabeth during his tenure as president, as having ‘automatic chemistry’ and calling her ‘a spectacular woman’. The current monarch, King Charles, is also said to be friendly with the controversial Republican and even when the presidential hopeful was shot at on stage last month.

When it comes to Harry and Meghan, however, it would appear there's no love lost – on either side. Eric's comments are unlikely to come as much of a surprise to the Duke and Duchess, especially Meghan Markle, who has made little secret of her political leanings. In 2020, ahead of the presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, the couple faced criticism after they recorded a which encouraged voter registration.

They may not have expressed any partisan bias – but Meghan called the election ‘the most important of our lifetime’, leading many to believe she was subtly endorsing Biden. Now that Trump looks set to win this next race to the White , there have been rumours that Meghan may diversify into herself, endorsing the Democratic party's nominee, Kamala Harris. Meghan previously praised the representation Harris brings to politics prior to becoming vice president in 2020, while Harris has posted supportive social media messages about the duchess.

If the Duchess were to publicly support Harris, it would be ‘absolutely pivotal,’ says Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal correspondent. Speaking to , he said, ‘There’s been speculation for such a long time that she might choose some form of politics. The possibility of a political career has always been there.

It's always been talked about. She's always been very articulate on issues, especially those dealing with race gender equality, and so on, which are big issues, especially in the Democratic party.’ As Meghan prepares to launch her new lifestyle brand, along with an upcoming Netflix series, she looks set on following a new course – one that sets her apart, once and for all, from the negative headlines that have dogged her and her husband since their well-publicised exit from the royal family.

Could a foray into politics be her next move? No one can say for certain – but in the event of a Republican win, don't expect to see her in Washington any time soon...
