Equinox, a determined four-year-old dark bay/brown filly bred by Producer – Emerald Moon, made a triumphant debut on Saturday, August 10, 2024, winning her maiden race by an impressive 5 3⁄4 lengths. Trained by Jason DaCosta and ridden by Abigail Able, Equinox clocked a respectable time of 1:00.2 (24.

0 x 46.3) over five furlongs straight, beating Beautiful Moon (Ramon Nepare) and Jet Ski Girl (Shane Ellis). But Equinox ’s journey to victory was far from easy.

According to DaCosta, the filly faced numerous health challenges from a young age, requiring a farm stay for recovery and later struggling to adjust to stable life. “Despite being a small-framed filly, she displayed determination and resilience,” DaCosta said. “After initially being sent to a farm for recovery as a young horse, Equinox encountered further setbacks upon entering the stables as a three-year-old.

“It took her some time to adjust to a stable life and training routines, but the team persisted, eventually guiding her in the right direction. But she had to be returned to the farm for further recuperation,” DaCosta added. Given her health history, DaCosta approached her training with caution, limiting her morning sessions and opting for a single pre-race gallop instead of the ideal two.

“We had to approach her training with caution, unable to push her as much as I would have liked during morning sessions. Although Equinox ideally needed two additional gallops to prepare for her debut race, she only had one due to her special circumstances. “Despite this, the team remained optimistic and decided to proceed with the race, eager to see how she would fare in the competitive environment of the track,” the trainer said.

DaCosta’s doubts were dispelled as Equinox crossed the finish line, her winning performance exceeding expectations. “While I always recognised her possible potential, the uncertainty stemming from her health history created doubts. Nevertheless, Equinox ’s winning performance was immensely encouraging, leaving hope for her future,” he said.

Looking ahead, DaCosta emphasised the importance of maintaining Equinox ’s health, aiming for her to excel in age-group conditions. With her determination and talent, Equinox is poised for a bright future in racing..
