Pune: The civic body on Tuesday demolished several illegal encroachments and in the Parihar Chowk area of Aundh. According to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, they had scaled down such action against illegal constructions and encroachments during the rainy season and the recent festival of Ganeshotsav. This same drive has now been restarted, they said.
Residents of Aundh and former elected representatives had raised objections to the illegal stalls in the area, prompting PMC to initiate the action. "The drive was conducted in association with ward offices. The encroachments were occupying the footpaths," said Somnath Bankar, head of PMC's anti-encroachment department.
In the first phase of the anti-encroachment drive , unauthorized structures on footpaths and roads in no-hawker zones designated by PMC are to be removed. Illegal businesses on busy roads and footpaths will also be cleared. Efforts will be made to rehabilitate licensed vendors as per the roadside vendor policy.
