Monday, August 26, 2024 The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is witnessing an impressive expansion in its national carriers’ destinations, driven by the nation’s solid reputation in global tourism and business, coupled with a resurgence in travel demand. The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has forecasted a significant milestone, projecting passenger traffic to soar to 140 million. This surge underscores the ongoing growth and competitiveness of UAE airlines in the global aviation market.

The UAE’s national carriers have expanded their reach, now serving approximately 606 destinations worldwide, including joint and cargo routes. This marks a notable 3.4 percent increase from the 586 destinations served at the close of 2023.



The current breakdown of destinations per carrier showcases Emirates leading with over 144 destinations, Etihad Airways with 79, flydubai covering 125, Air Arabia reaching 218, and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi serving 40 destinations. Etihad Airways stands out with its ambitious plans to expand its route network, targeting 125 destinations by 2030. The airline is strategically leveraging its location between Asia and Europe, aiming to boost its annual passenger count to 33 million.

Since the beginning of this year, Etihad Airways has been actively strengthening its network, with significant plans to reach over 125 destinations by the end of the decade. In pursuit of its expansion strategy, Etihad Airways introduced 15 new routes last year, including key destinations such as Lisbon, Copenhagen, Calcutta, and Osaka. The airline plans to further increase its presence in Asia by raising its flights to Thailand to 41 per week starting in October.

Additionally, Etihad is set to resume flights to Nairobi on December 15th, marking a significant step in its ongoing expansion efforts. The first seven months of 2024 have been particularly strong for Etihad Airways. The airline carried 10.

4 million passengers, a significant achievement that aligns with its growth strategy. By the end of July, Etihad had expanded its fleet to 93 aircraft, up from 78 in July 2023, and added 10 new destinations to its network within the year. Financially, Etihad Airways reported impressive results in the first half of 2024.

The airline recorded a net profit after tax of AED 851 million, representing a 48 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Revenues also grew by 21 percent, reaching AED 11.7 billion, highlighting the airline’s robust financial performance amid its expansion.

Emirates, another major player in the UAE aviation sector, continues to operate an extensive network covering 144 passenger and cargo destinations across six continents. The airline is focused on increasing seat capacity to meet the rising demand for travel and offering flexibility and choice for travelers passing through Dubai. In line with its commitment to enhancing the passenger experience, Emirates is set to introduce its upgraded Boeing 777 aircraft on routes to Zurich and Riyadh in early October.

The same aircraft will soon be added to operations in Geneva and Brussels, as part of Emirates’ ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet. Emirates’ modernization program includes the upgrade of 80 Boeing 777 aircraft, a key component of the airline’s more than USD 3 billion investment aimed at delivering the best products and services in the industry. This initiative is designed to elevate the passenger experience to unprecedented levels, reinforcing Emirates’ position as a leader in global aviation.

The expansion and modernization efforts of UAE’s national carriers reflect the country’s strategic focus on maintaining its competitive edge in the global aviation market. The significant increase in destinations, coupled with fleet expansion and route network enhancement, underscores the UAE’s commitment to serving as a global hub for travel and commerce.
