The emergency services are set to swarm a Sussex beach to test responses to a hypothetical oil spill at sea. Coastguard, council staff and environmental agencies will be at Newhaven beach, near the lifeguard hut, tomorrow. They will be testing their response to a mock scenario involving a coastal oil spill from a wrecked ship.

East Sussex Council has warned that beach-goers may see equipment and response workers throughout the day. A spokeswoman said: "The incident is to test how partner organisations across Sussex (including emergency services, coastguard, local councils and environmental agencies) would react in the event of a coastal oil spill from a wrecked ship. "It is part of a regular partnership working by the organisations, as part of the Sussex Resilience Forum, to prepare for, and manage, incidents in the county.
