Actor Elliot Page will play the lead role of Sam (Image: Getty) The first trailer for Elliot Page’s new film Close to You landed this week and fans have been united in their response. Close to You is the first male film role Umbrella Academy star Page has held and follows the story of Sam (played by Page) who is returning to reunite with his family for his father’s birthday after four years away. It’s also the first time he’ll be seeing them after transitioning.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “Sam (Elliot Page) hasn’t been home since his transition. After four years in Toronto, he takes a long-dreaded trip back to his hometown for his father’s birthday. Once there, he confronts unresolved wounds and reconnects with an old flame.

It has been an honour to work with Elliot to bring this very poignant, personal and important story to life and to the screen.” Watch the trailer for Close to You below Page recently penned an autobiography titled Pageboy which delved into his own experience coming out as a transgender man in 2020. It details how he embraced his identity, especially following a high-profile career playing female roles on-screen which had earned him an Oscar nomination.
Reacting to the Close to You trailer, fans all said the same thing about the film, particularly around a major actor portraying the trans experience on screen. “This is super amazing! Telling a trans story is not common in today’s media. Let’s go Elliot!” one commenter said.
Another said they already felt connected to the film, writing: “I've never seen a story like mine on the big screen. Visibility is the key to understanding. Thank you Elliot, for sharing your experience through your art.

” Joining Page in the cast will be Wendy Crewson, Peter Outerbridge, Janet Porter, Alex Paxton-Beesley, Daniel Maslany and David Reale. Close to You will be released in the US on August 16. A UK date is yet to be announced.
