Susan Wild and Ryan Mackenzie, vying for Pennsylvania’s competitive 7th District seat in Congress, differ on issues like inflation, immigration and abortion, but share similar thoughts on U.S. energy policy and diplomacy.

The Morning Call sat down with both candidates to ask about top election issues selected by our readers via a survey. Both candidates were asked to focus specifically on their own stances, policies and plans, not criticisms of their opponent. Wild, a former lawyer and congresswoman since 2018, describes herself as a moderate Democrat.

She has sponsored bills to lower prescription drug costs and expand and protect access to in vitro fertilization . Mackenzie, a six-term Republican state representative from Emmaus, also has emphasized his legislative record on the campaign trail, which includes opposing tax increases, authoring a law that disqualifies unauthorized immigrants from construction jobs, and establishing a statewide maternal mortality review committee. The race is expected to be one of the most competitive in the country and could determine which party takes control of the House of Representatives next year.

Cook Political Report has rated the race a “Democrat toss up,” with Wild slightly favored. In their own words, here are the candidates’ thoughts on top issues including inflation, immigration, abortion and climate change. Responses have been edited for length and clarity.
