The race for Bamberg County Council District 1 features an incumbent and a challenger who say increased transparency and an increased EMS presence are among the issues they will tackle. Incumbent Phil Myers is running for his second four-year term. Bamberg City Councilman Kenneth Ahlin is challenging him for the seat.

The general election is Nov. 5. Myers says he has unfinished business, including making continued enhancements to the county’s EMS system.



“When I went into council four years ago, our EMS system was in bad shape. The previous provider wasn’t doing what it was supposed to be doing. They were not giving good patient care.

They were being pretty shoddy with their work,” Myers said. “I was able to get that changed. We went to a new provider.

Right now, we’re at a pretty good shape. We still only have two trucks in the county. I’d like to see that at three, but we were able to work out where we’ve got a third truck serving the lower part of the county, which is a low-call-volume part of the county.

a full-time 911 truck down there, but you’ve got to have the call volume to do that. We haven’t gotten that yet, but I think as time goes, we will get it. That was one of my main reasons for going back in.
