EDITORIAL A new requirement for airlines to report their performance through a government agency brings New Zealand closer to what is done overseas for passengers and is a welcome move. Transport Minister Simeon Brown announced this week the Ministry of Transport would develop a monthly on-time performance report for airlines. He said the report will provide valuable insights into on-time arrivals, departures and cancellations, giving both the industry and New Zealanders a clear picture of how well our aviation services are performing.

At long last. Such data is widely available overseas through official channels. In the United States, the Department of Transportation releases a monthly analysis of how airlines’ on-time performance (OTP) is tracking, making comparisons between them simple.

Figures for lost bags and mishandled wheelchairs and scooters are also released in the interests of providing information on the quality of service provided by airlines..
