Pune: The Vishrantwadi police on Wednesday arrested eatery waiter Amol Kamble (25) on the charge of assaulting a woman (25) to death with a billhook on a road in Kalas around 8.15pm on Tuesday. The woman, a housewife, died on Wednesday morning while undergoing medical treatment at a hospital.

Senior inspector Kanchan Jadhav of the Vishrantwadi police told TOI, "The assault took place when the deceased and her friend were walking to their houses after watching the immersion procession of Ganapati mandals. Kamble reached the spot and attacked her with the billhook. She had suffered serious head injuries in the attack.

The passersby and others apprehended the accused and alerted the police." Jadhav said, "The woman and Kamble knew each other since childhood. He used to follow her.

Three years ago, the woman got married and moved to Beed with her husband. However, for job purposes, the deceased and her husband shifted to Kalas two months ago. After shifting to Pune, the woman updated status on a cellphone's messaging application stating that she had moved to Pune.

The accused read the status and started following her." The officer said police suspected that he might have made advances towards her four years ago. "Kamble was holding a grudge against her since then," she said.
