Coming off banner snowfalls last ski season, western ski resorts are currently receiving substantial snow before their season officially begins. Utah started seeing snowfall in September on the peaks of Alta Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, as well as in the Wasatch Back and Cottonwood Canyons at Park City Mountain, and most of Utah’s iconic ski resorts are slated to open for the season the week of Nov.
22. Last season Utah’s 15 ski areas recorded 6,746,008 skier visits, the second most in the state’s history. Billed as “The Greatest Snow on Earth,” Utah’s snow has an average water content of about 8% making it low density of quite powdery, ideal for powder hounds who flock to one of the state’s storied ski areas.
Utah's mountains are surrounded by high desert, so there's no excess moisture in the air to weigh down the snow. In addition to Utah, ski resorts throughout Arizona, Idaho and Colorado also have plans to open soon. Utah is home to 15 resorts for skiers of all levels.
