Pune: A 72-year-old woman in Wakad was allegedly robbed of gold jewellery worth Rs1.3 lakh by two persons on the pretext of helping her get free ration and money being distributed by a godman. The incident occurred around 11.

30am when the woman deboarded a PMPML bus at Kalewadi Phata and was walking to her home in Kaspte Vasti. "The woman said the duo told her that a godman had recently become a father of a son and was distributing free ration money to people in the area," an officer from the Wakad police told TOI. The officer said the woman did not suspect the duo and followed them to avail of the ‘free ration and money'.

"However, on the way, the men took her near the stairs of a bank and told her to remove her gold jewellery, claiming that the godman did not like gold," he said. The victim then removed her two gold chains, a ring and a pair of earrings, collectively worth Rs1.3 lakh and kept them with her.

"The duo, under the pretext of helping her keep the jewellery in the bag, stole it and fled," the officer said, adding that the victim then filed a complaint with the Wakad police. This is the second incident in the last four days after two persons robbed a 70-year-old woman at Chaphekar Chowk in Chinchwad in a similar modus operandi last Sunday. Meanwhile, an officer of the Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch said the police had collected CCTV footage from both spots.

"We suspect a gang to be involved in these cases and are working on some clues," he said..
