Pune: A third incident within a week of criminals robbing victims after picking petty quarrels with the latter has occurred in the city around midnight on Thursday. In the latest crime, two men on a scooter intercepted a two-wheeler rider (34) and robbed him of a gold chain worth Rs30,000 near the PMC main building in Shivajinagar, after picking a quarrel over a non-existent issue. The victim, who works as a private vehicle driver, is a resident of Alandi Road in Kalas.

On Wednesday night, he had come to Jangli Maharaj (JM) Road to meet his brother-in-law, who runs a tea stall there. “After dinner, the duo was returning home on the victim’s two-wheeler, when the two suspects on a scooter intercepted them near the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) building,” an officer from the Shivajinagar police told TOI. He said the pillion rider on the scooter picked an argument with the complainant, claiming that he had abused his brother.

“Before the victim could say anything, the suspect started frisking him. He suddenly snatched his gold chain worth Rs30,000 and jumped onto the scooter, after which the duo zoomed off,” said the officer. Neither the complainant nor his brother-in-law was able to note the registration number of the scooter.

“However, they have given a detailed description of the duo. We are looking into it,” said the officer. In the earlier two incidents, a college student was robbed of his gold chain worth Rs60,000 in a similar manner in front of the Sundarbai Rathi school on Laxmi Road in the early hours of Aug 12; on Aug 7, a 43-year-old software engineer was robbed of a chain worth Rs2 lakh in Karvenagar.

The Pune crime branch is verifying whether the same robbers have been involved in these crimes. “We have collected CCTV footage from the crime scenes. Our investigations are on,” an officer from the crime branch told TOI.
