Sunday, September 15, 2024 Commuting in Dubai has become easier with the opening of two key bridges as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project . The newly opened bridges span 1,265 meters, each with two lanes, and have drastically improved traffic flow during peak hours. The first bridge, extending 601 meters, has a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour and serves eastbound traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, continuing north towards Al Qusais and Deira .

The second bridge, at 664 meters, eliminates overlapping traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali Port , further enhancing smooth traffic flow. A third and final bridge is scheduled to open in October , spanning 943 meters with two lanes in each direction, designed to handle 8,000 vehicles per hour . It will improve connectivity between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

Mattar Al Tayer , Director General and Chairman of the RTA, announced that the project is 97% complete , in line with directives from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and closely monitored by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , Crown Prince of Dubai. The project aims to support Dubai’s growth and address increasing urbanization needs. Upon completion, it will link major roads, including Sheikh Zayed Road , First Al Khail Road , and Al Asayel Street , with four bridges totaling 2,874 meters and a capacity for 17,600 vehicles per hour .

The project, part of the RTA’s master plan to develop east-west traffic corridors , will reduce travel time from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road by 40%, cutting the commute from 20 minutes to 12 minutes during peak hours. It will also slash the journey time from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Street by 70% , from 21 minutes to just 7 minutes. Additional Features : The improvement project spans 7 kilometers and includes upgrades to service roads, traffic signals, street lighting, and stormwater drainage systems.

The initiative also complements other strategic traffic corridors such as the completed Al Yalayis Street and Expo Street , catering to Dubai’s current and future traffic demands. More from Transport.
