Duhallow JAHC Final: Dromtariffe 3-18 Newmarket 3-14 DROMTARIFFE cemented their name as the best in the Duhallow JAHC after overcoming holders Newmarket in a thrilling divisional decider at Millstreet on Sunday. As heavyweight clashes go, the meeting of these great rivals didn’t disappoint the large attendance for a cracking game unfolded. When required, Dromtariffe overcame adversary and provided an exhibition of stickwork and industry to claim their fifth title in seven seasons, after facing a severe test of character, the new champions rose to the challenge.
Proceedings were held up for 10 minutes in the opening half owing to a serious injury picked up by Dromtariffe corner forward Darren O’Connor but when play resumed, a Tomás Howard goal helped secure a 1-10 to 0-7 interval advantage for the new champions. Newmarket began the second half in encouraging fashion, boosted by a Cathal Browne goal to help alter the scoreboard 1-13 to 1-12 in favour of Newmarket at the three quarter stage. To their credit, Dromtariffe stemmed the flow, goals from man of the match Howard and Brandon Murphy in a scoring flourish helped build up a 10 point grip.
Newmarket never gave up, late goals from Barry O’Connor and Hugh O’Connor proved consolation scores as Dromtariffe captain Conor O’Callaghan lifted the John Joe Brosnan Memorial Cup amidst joyous scenes of celebration.
