Who can say what was on the mind of legendary Doris Lockhart Saatchi when she split from her husband, Charles in 1987. Finding a new place to call home, perhaps? Or a place to her treasure trove of a contemporary art collection? Killing two birds with one commission, Saatchi employed the now-legendary architect John Pawson to build her a home where she could not only rest her head, but hang her Damian Hurst. Now, the Hay's Mews marvel – which has also been called home by art patron Ralph I Goldenberg – has sold via Wetherell for £6.
5 million. An architectural wonder, the house has witnessed some of the most iconic names and works of the art scene, including Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and Willem DeKooning. Samson Pfeiffer, Sales Manager at Wetherell, called the house on Hay's Mews ‘a masterpiece of minimalist architecture,’ adding that ‘there is truly no other artistic residence like this in Mayfair’.
With its pure white interiors, clean-lined walls, and full height windows, though, the house is a work of art in itself. Pawson, who would go on to design homes for and Calvin Klein, decorated Hay's Mews with items that are now architectural classics. From the iconic handle-free door, to the marble Pawson Saatchi basins in the bathroom and the kitchen’s built-in stainless steel central island, the Mayfair house is an aesthete’s dream, regardless of what you choose to hang on its mirrored walls.
The collaboration between Saatchi and Pawson was massively producti.
