rte.ie Among watch collectors and afficionados 'designer watches' are the ones you buy in shopping mall jewellery stores, often with quartz movements and branded by the likes of Boss or Emporio Armani with little or virtually zero resale value. They really mean 'luxury watches' (Rolex, AP, etc) but seem to think 'designer' denotes high value, it doesn't, quite the opposite.

. Timex aren't that bad and have some tradition behind them being an amalgamation of a couple of U.S.

brands in the 1950s as far as I remember. I have a couple of Omegas, one a quartz from the 90s. Steak-knife said: Timex aren't that bad and have some tradition behind them being an amalgamation of a couple of U.

.. When I was an au pair in France as a teenager, the family (who were extremely wealthy) gave me a gift of a vintage lady's Tissot watch with little jewels.

I lost it of course, like everything else. gatsbygirl20 said: When I was an au pair in France as a teenager, the family (who were extremely wealthy) gave me a gift of a vintage lady's Tissot watch with little jewels. I lost it of course, like everything else.

Watches are more a man's thing (male jewelry)and there's not much interest in lady's watches. Vintage lady's watches don't have the same value as their men's equivalent. Tissot are now part of the Swatch Group, as are Omega, and considered third tier.

I used to be a bit of a watch snob, now I wear a fitbit type thingy, whose USP is being waterproof, and recording steps, and telling me when my heart rate has gone nuts doing squats in the gym...

It's cheap enough for me to not give a shit. Very liberating, compared to wearing two mortgage payments on my wrist. Steak-knife said: Watches are more a man's thing (male jewelry)and there's not much interest in lady's watches.

.. Sorry, thought the truth might be some consolation considering you lost the watch.

There are some women who are into watches but they're greatly outnumbered. Steak-knife said: Sorry, thought the truth might be some consolation considering you lost the watch. There are some women who are into watches but they're greatly outnumbered.

The watch was gifted to me in the 1970s. So when I say "vintage" I mean from the 1920s. Had it for years.

I no longer wear a watch or jewellery. I lost almost everything, including stuff of sentimental value---my grandmother's ring, Edwardian brooches in lapis lazuli and jade..

..vintage 1920s costume pearls I got in Jenny Vanders in the 1970s.

...

a beautiful ring my late husband had specially made for me...

.. I mislaid the watch---changing room at tennis.

...

or washing my hands in the ladies' room of a pub after a few margaritas...

who knows? My house was burgled many years ago. My vintage pearls and grandmother's ring were stolen When I was standing in front of a class teaching, I had a habit of twisting my rings and necklaces, and removing them as I was talking. They would never be seen again.

I am claustrophobic. For some reason I feel trapped or constrained by jewellery. I rarely wear any these days gatsbygirl20 said: When I was an au pair in France as a teenager, the family (who were extremely wealthy) gave me a gift of a vintage lady's Tissot watch with little jewels.

. An au pair losing it in France? There's a film in that. It's been made about 1000 times, of course.

. *Sigh* I guess I'll have to mansplain this one. It's OK, guys, I've got this one.

Y'see, when I buy a watch, as a man I'm demanding much more than a timepiece. Who knows what trials and tribulations I will expect it to endure? I may find myself one day at 120m depth defusing a nuclear device. The next day might see me in freefall at 6,000m, where the temperature will be -40°.

I may find myself in a donnybrook with some henchmen (and using both fists, I might add). I may end up undergoing the compression wave of an explosion as I flee it. Throughout all of this I will require something which will match an atomic clock for accuracy.

Something which can survive a wayward drop of cocktail as an ice cube is added doesn't match up..
