People have been urged to not risk death this summer by jumping off the pier. Adur and Worthing Councils is reminding people that tombstoning, the act of jumping from a height into water, is extremely dangerous and can cause life-changing injuries or death. The shallow water can mean that people jumping may hit their heads or suffer a serious injury from rocks beneath the surface.
People can also be at risk of suffering from the shock of the cold water. READ MORE: RNLI condemn 'tombstoning' over Bank Holiday A spokesman for the council said: "Jumping into the water along our coastline or river might look tempting in hot weather, but we’re urging everyone to not risk life-changing injuries or death by ‘tombstoning.’ "Even at high tide the water surrounding Worthing Pier or flowing through the River Adur isn't deep enough, making jumping, diving or somersaulting into it extremely dangerous.
"Please be safe and enter the water from the beach or riverbank.".
