Dolly Parton was among the many stars who mourned the loss of 'great writer and great actor' Kris Kristofferson. The country music superstar died at his home on Maui, Hawaii on Saturday, family spokeswoman Ebie McFarland said in an email. He was 88 years old .

McFarland said Kristofferson died peacefully, surrounded by his family. No cause was given. A Golden Globe winner for the 1976 movie A Star is Born alongside Barbara Streisand, the Rhodes scholar with a deft writing style and rough charisma became a country music superstar and A-list Hollywood actor who won four Grammy awards including a lifetime achievement award in 2014.



After the news of his death was announced, his close friend Dolly took to her Instagram page to share a sweet tribute to the singer. She wrote: "What a great loss, What a great writer, What a great actor, What a great friend, I will always love you," before signing her name and adding a butterfly. The 78-year-old Jolene hitmaker and Kris were longtime friends and collaborated on many performances, such as From Here to The Moon and Put It Off Until Tomorrow.

In 1982, Kris and Dolly collaborated with Willie Nelson and Brenda Lee for a compilation album called The Winning Hand. The album soon inspired a TV special of the same name, which aired in 1985 and was hosted by none other than Johnny Cash. Dolly recently shared a throwback video on her social media page of her and Kris performing Ping Pong from The Winning Hand.
