Vadodara: While the city was reeling under floods , a doctor risked his life to carry out an organ transplantation surgery early on Thursday morning. Dr Rahesh Desai travelled on a tractor from Sama area to Bhailal Amin General Hospital (BAGH) in Gorwa to carry out the transplantation. The surgery was successful as a kidney and the liver of a 75-year-old deceased man were donated to two patients.

While the liver was transplanted to a 53-year-old man who had been suffering from chronic liver disease for the past eight years, the kidney went to a 50-year-old woman who was on dialysis. The surgery, done by an expert team of surgeons, began at 2am on Thursday at BAGH and continued for 14 hours. One kidney was donated to a hospital in Ahmedabad.



Ravi Hirwani, senior vice-president, BAGH, Vadodara said: “The city was dealing with floods but despite the challenges, all resources were mobilised on an immediate basis in the middle of the night. Doctors were brought to the hospital on a tractor to ensure that there was no delay in the process.” BAGH officials said that a 75-year-old man had been admitted to their hospital on Aug 24 and investigation revealed that he had suffered from a large brain haemorrhage.

He was kept in the ICU but the man died on Aug 27. Upon discussion with his family, the hospital authorities found that his last wish was to donate his organs to save as many lives as possible.
