Dakshina Kannada SP Yathish N said it is a matter of concern that educated individuals and professionals are increasingly becoming victims. “We have begun enhancing our awareness campaigns through social media, where we are posting short videos on cybercrime prevention .
Also, DSPs and inspectors are visiting schools and colleges to educate students about these threats. Our goal is to spread this awareness to their families as well,” SP Yathish N said. To reach a wider audience, the department is planning to organise corner meetings in markets and crowded areas once the rain subsides.
These sessions will include video screenings on various types of cyber crimes, illustrating the tactics used by fraudsters, SP Yathish said. The SP noted that the rapid evolution of cybercrimes poses a significant challenge. On Thursday alone, three individuals, including a student, lost approximately Rs 12 lakh to cyberfrauds in the district.
Common scams include stock market trading frauds, job scams, online loan schemes, and phishing attacks, where fake payment gateways trick victims into sharing their details. Online marketplaces also offer products at unrealistically low prices, deceiving buyers. “Many cybercrime cases go unreported until it is too late.
By the time victims realise they have been defrauded, the money is often transferred through multiple accounts, making it hard to trace,” the SP said. He urged citizens to report cyber financial frauds to the National Helpline number 1930 to help block transferred money and recover lost funds. Regarding drug abuse, the SP said that police are actively working to combat this issue, citing the seizure of 10g of MDMA in Uppinangady on Thursday.
