Photo: District of Summerland The District of Summerland has added two new bear-proof garbage cans to help "keep trails and parks cleaner and safer." Bins have been added to the Conkle Mountain Trailhead at the Rodeo Grounds and Giants Head Mountain Boulevard. "Plus, all the downtown garbage cans are getting an upgrade, too! Let's keep our community beautiful and wildlife-friendly together," said the district in the announcement.
Recently, a S ummerland resident expressed concerns with the district's new food waste pickup program, worried it is attracting bears as they kept getting into the resident's garbage. The District is looking into whether it could partner with the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen for joint purchasing of bear resistant carts, or wildlife resistant carts, as the bins are generally five to eight times more expensive than the average cart..
