Allegations of abuse at a mental health facility spanning decades have sparked an investigation into Queensland's "very dark history". or signup to continue reading Health Minister Shannon Fentiman on Friday confirmed a probe would look into the "distressing" claims from former patients of Brisbane's Wolston Park centre. Former patients from the 1950s to the 1980s have alleged they suffered abuse at the facility which closed in 2001.
They include claims of sexual abuse, beatings and chemical restraint. "These stories are distressing. They are unfortunately a part of a very dark history that we have here in Queensland," Ms Fentiman told reporters.
"To be able to allow people to heal and move on and to ensure that this doesn't ever happen again, we have to allow this kind of investigation to happen." The allegations of historical abuse were first aired recently in an ABC TV investigation. Ms Fentiman said state Mental Health Commissioner Ivan Frkovic had been directed to investigate the claims.
"He'll work with stakeholders, former patients and their families on making sure we get the terms of reference right," she said. "He'll then conduct that investigation and report back to me with a special report and any recommendations." The Mental Health Commission is set to investigate the health services provided at Wolston Park between the 1950s and 1990s.
Ms Fentiman said West Moreton Hospital and Health Service would assist in releasing and accessing medical records to families and carers of patients from that period.
