Sunday, September 15, 2024 Dubrovnik, one of Croatia’s top tourist destinations, has faced the challenges of overtourism head-on. Known for its medieval Old Town and as a prominent filming location for Game of Thrones , the city’s popularity has surged, particularly during the peak summer months. This influx of visitors has placed significant strain on its infrastructure, leading to concerns among locals.

To address these issues, Dubrovnik has implemented several strategies aimed at managing the number of visitors and preserving the city’s cultural and historical integrity. A major step has been limiting the number of cruise ships that can dock at the port, allowing only two ships per day. This significantly reduces the overwhelming crowds from cruise passengers that often flooded the narrow streets.

The city has also introduced a digital reservation system for visiting popular attractions, such as the ancient city walls. Starting January 1, 2025, this system will limit the number of visitors per day to ease congestion at these key spots. Additionally, Dubrovnik’s “Respect the City” campaign encourages responsible tourism by promoting awareness of the cultural and historical significance of the city.

Through these efforts, Dubrovnik aims to strike a balance between supporting tourism and maintaining the quality of life for its residents. Mayor Mato Franković has also worked with major travel platforms like Booking.com and Airbnb to regulate short-term rentals in the Old Town.

This move ensures that tourism does not dominate residential areas, allowing locals to enjoy their city while benefiting from the economic opportunities that tourism provides. Despite the challenges, Dubrovnik remains committed to sustainable tourism practices, helping it continue to thrive as a vibrant destination for both tourists and locals. Early signs suggest that these initiatives are already making a positive impact, preserving the city’s charm while enhancing the visitor experience.
