Pune: Low-lying areas along the Mutha river flowing through the city were placed on alert mode on Saturday after water was discharged from the Khadakwasla dam at a rate of 27,841 cusecs. The civic body deployed teams at vulnerable areas of Sinhagad Road, Pulachi Wadi, Khadki, Patil Estate, Yerawada and other spots to monitor the situation and shift citizens to safer places. Dam discharge water was increased after all four dams in the Khadakwasla circle recorded heavy rainfall on Saturday.
Temghar, Varasgaon, and Panshet dams received over 100mm of rainfall, which prompted the state irrigation department to release water from these dams into Khadakwasla. Increased water levels led to the closure of Baba Bhide bridge and riverside roads. Many cars parked on the riverside road were stuck because of a sharp increase in water levels by evening.
