A new study has found that diabetes and obesity can be the cause of relapse of liver cancer which is one of the most common forms of cancer across the globe. The study was led by researchers from the Osaka Metropolitan University and published in the journal Liver Cancer. The study focused on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
This is a type of liver which is linked to hepatitis infections and is known to have a high recurrence rate after cancer removal. It is also the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Obesity and diabetes which are closely associated with metabolic syndrome development.
Obesity and diabetes are key contributors to metabolic syndrome. These are a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and other health issues. Obesity, particularly excess fat around the abdomen leads to insulin resistance wherein cells become less responsive to insulin.
This resistance causes the body to produce more insulin, thereby, leading to type 2 diabetes. High blood sugar levels from diabetes can damage blood vessels and affect cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of cardiovascular problems. Obesity also contributes to elevated blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol levels, both hallmarks of metabolic syndrome.
Excess fat tissue, especially visceral fat, triggers inflammation and hormonal changes that worsen insulin resistance and other metabolic disturbances. Together, these conditions create a cycle that heightens the risk of develo.
