DICKINSON — The anticipation for the Dickinson Midgets’ regular-season finale has been building since last week. Following their ninth-straight victory over Turtle Mountain on Friday, the Midgets turned their attention to the Minot Majettes, where both teams would be battling for the No. 3 seed in the WDA Tournament next week.
Unfortunately for the Midgets, they lost in heartbreaking fashion in front of their own fans. After DHS took a 2-0 lead in the match, the Majettes stormed back with three unanswered wins to earn that coveted three-spot in the WDA quarterfinals. ADVERTISEMENT “We kind of talked about how this needs to be more of a learning moment than anything else,” Midgets head coach Taylor Hafner said.
“What could we do to make sure that we are being more resilient and that we're focusing on every single play and staying effective.” While it was a devastating way for DHS to close out the regular-season, these types of matches are exactly the type of action it will be seeing once the postseason rolls around. The action and the atmosphere inside the Dickinson High gym felt like a playoff game.
DHS had a strong start to ignite the home crowd early. The Midgets went on a 3-0 scoring run to make it 8-5 before Minot battled back to tie it. One of the things DHS excelled at in the opening frame was blocking, as they racked up 4 blocks in the critical moments of the set.
Junior outside-hitter Jenna Nelson led the Midgets with 3 blocks and junior middle-hitter Jers.
