Dele Ogunyemi The Delta State Government has set up a 16-member flood management committee to mitigate the impact of perennial flooding in the state. The committee comprises key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies along with stakeholders typically involved in disaster management situations. This development follows the release of the 2024 annual flood outlook.

The State Commissioner for Information, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, disclosed this to The PUNCH in a signed statement on Sunday. According to the statement, the committee, headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, has already “identified and prepared upland locations that can be used as camps for Internally Displaced Persons who may eventually become displaced or dislocated, if the need arises.” The statement partly read, “Sensitisation and stakeholders’ meetings have also been held to prepare for any unforeseen incidents by NEMA and SEMA.

“Appropriate enlightenment jingles are running and being aired on all media outlets and establishments across the state, on flood alerts. “Continuous visits to likely affected areas to monitor the level of flooding are also being carried out. It added, “Daily and weekly predictions of rainfall and its likely effects, as reported by the relevant agencies, are being adequately circulated across the nooks and crannies of the state.

“Regarding mitigation, the Ministry of Environment, the Waste Management Board, and other stakeholders have been directed accordingly and are working tirelessly to clear and open up blocked drains and waterways, to allow for the free flow of rainwater to the coastal lines where the State Stormwater projects are directed.” Copyright PUNCH All rights reserved.
