BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech’s victory Saturday over Georgia Tech won’t be shown on repeat as a game of the year nominee in the near future. There weren’t any breakout offensive performances, a standout showing on the defensive side of the ball or special teams heroics. Has there been any type of win like that in Brent Pry’s two-plus seasons at the helm? Outside of the Hokies’ one-point triumph at Liberty at the end of the 2022 season, every other victory under Pry came by comfortable margins.

Attention-deserving performances were authored by quarterback Kyron Drones and tailback Bhayhsul Tuten. Defensive end Antwaun Powell-Ryland headlined defensive efforts that made opposing offensive lines crack under pressure. The 21-6 victory over the Yellow Jackets marked only the second time under Pry that the Hokies did not win by three or more scores.

More specifically, it was the first time in Pry’s tenure that Tech claimed a victory by a two-score margin. It might be exactly the type of win the Hokies (5-3, 3-1 ACC) need heading into the final third of the regular season. “You have to have some of these in your journey to having a good football team,” Star linebackers coach Shawn Quinn said.

“I’ve never been part of a championship team or a quality football team that didn’t have a tough win. They’re not always going to be blowouts; they’re not always going to be 7,000 yards and everything goes perfect. There’s going to be challenges.
