TENNERTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Defense set the tone for a new-look Buckhannon-Upshur boys basketball team in a season-opening home victory over the visiting Philip Barbour Colts on Friday, 44-34.
Outside of a 15-point third-quarter Colt rally, Buckhannon-Upshur’s defensive pressure dictated the action — holding Philip Barbour to four points in the first, nine in the second and just six in the decisive fourth to clinch the win. Offensively, the Buccaneer starting five carried the load, combining to score all 44 of Buckhannon-Upshur’s points. Jerin Westfall led the way with a double-double, netting a game-high 20 points, pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with two assists, one block and one steal.
Brody McDaniels also reached double figures, adding 11 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal. Brody Jeran with five points, three rebounds and one assist, Xavier Robinette with five points, four rebounds, one assist and Jevon Westfall with three points, 10 rebounds, five assists rounded out the starters’ stat-lines for the Buccaneers. While nine different Philip Barbour players scored at least once — the Buccaneers allowed didn’t allow any Colt to reach double-digits.
Malachi Poling led the Colts with a team-high eight points while Patrick Webster chimed in with seven. Adam Bailey scored five points with Dayton Morrison and Talan Stout tallying three points apiece. Cam Bennett, Logan Watson, Kale Wolfe and Landyn Carpenter each chipped in two point.
